Frequently Asked Questions

What is GRAFF ST?

GRAFF STREET supports graffiti and street art collaborations in and around Melbourne, Australia. This creative coalition emerged from a thirteen-year-old artist-run initiative called tbC based in Belgrave, east of Melbourne. Members of tbC painted walls along laneways and bike paths and at train stations and skate parks in partnership with councils, statutory authorities, traders and township groups. While tbC has come to a natural conclusion, its graffiti and street art projects have not. Today GRAFF STREET supports a growing list of projects and painters. It also supports a growing list of filmmakers, photographers and sound artists who help us document these projects.

The Blacksmiths Way Graffiti and Street Art Project is a collaborative public art project based in Belgrave, an outer eastern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Blacksmiths Way is a 400m laneway behind the Belgrave shops alongside the township's train line. The project was seeded in 2015 by an artist-run initiative called tbC. For many years tbC's studio was part of the shops that back onto Blacksmiths Way. In 2015 member artists began painting the studio's rear walls. This practice grew to include the rear walls of all the shops along the laneway. The success of The Blacksmiths Way Graffiti and Street Art Project has revived the 1980s and 90s painting culture in and around Belgrave, attracting many original graffiti writers and painters back to the site. Locals love the project, and people from all over Melbourne travel to see the works. Click the image above to view a short film about the earlier version of the project.
