Artwork Description: The innate drive to emerge from a depressive episode
My art is heavily influenced by my lived experience with chronic mental illness. I use art for my mental wellbeing; to express and tolerate my emotions, to process trauma, and for self exploration, acceptance and expression.
Utilising various media, my work has themes of challenging societal norms, self acceptance, understanding lived experiences / mental illness, and the communication of these issues with society.
For me, vibrant colours represent the full spectrum of positive experiences life can bring. I often depict colours of the rainbow emerging from a black background, to remind myself I too will break through the darkness at some stage. Organic shapes show that flexibility, acceptance and going with the flow assist me to escape the rigid confines of thinking patterns that entrap me.
I want to normalise neurodiversity, to challenge stereotypes, to highlight individuality and engage with society in conversations about these things.
